Separation of Father and Son in Genesis Essay -- Holy Bible Genesis Es

"Who is YHWH? However we interpret it, the Name of God means ultimate dominion: He-Whom-There-Is-No-Escaping." ~Thomas Cahill, The Gifts of the Jews1 Ultimate dominion, that God’s rule is final, is the heart and soul of the Book of Genesis. In the beginning there was God; later, God created man (Gen. 1.1, 1.27).2 But how does God’s ultimate dominion affect the relationship that develops between God and man? Several times in Genesis God makes a covenant with man (Gen. 6.18, 17.2-8, 28.13-14). Explicit in this agreement, man is put in charge of perpetuating God’s covenant, or in essence perpetuating the Israelite race. On the one hand, then, it is the father’s job to impart knowledge of this important relationship to his son. On the other hand, the son must also take an active role in learning about and connecting with God. To do so, however, the son is forced to separate himself from his father in order to establish a singular or individual relationship with God. Juggling the father’s role and the son’s role in the passing of the faith from one generation to the next creates a tension t hat at first seems to put a strain on the ultimate dominion of God. It is this very tension, however, that reinforces God as the preeminent being. Examining this relationship of father and son for every male character throughout Genesis would prove overly exhaustive and unnecessary. In fact, the characters themselves are not of singular importance to the doctrine of Genesis. Rather, it is the formula of separation that emerges as the larger "lesson," so to speak, inherent in Genesis. This formula can be derived through an extensive comparison of two primary characters, which, of course, can then be extrapolated to incorporate othe... ... As we have seen, the separation of father from son in Genesis is necessary so that the son can develop an equally personal relationship with God and, in turn, sustain an equally living and vital knowledge of God as the absolute provider and father. Further, the more radical the separation the more strongly impressed in the son’s mind becomes the separation and, in turn, the ultimate dominion of God. It is little wonder, then, that the Hebrew interpretation of God, YHWH, has been carried through hundreds of generations and survived great epochs—after all, YHWH is "He-Whom-There-Is-No-Escaping" (Cahill 113). Glmaorizing Teen Pregnancy Essay

Media, specifically television has taken the issue of teen pregnancy to a whole other level. The shows 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager document the lives of young teenage girls facing the issue of being a pregnant teenager. Originally created to show the controversial subject of teen pregnancy, all of these shows soon began to change. As the seasons continued in all three of these shows, the controversial subject of teen pregnancy soon became a glorifying concept. What was first viewed as just a fantasy is now becoming a reality for many teenagers. Viewers of these shows are now seeing that teen pregnancy isn’t all that bad; it may even be considered normal according to MTV and ABC Family. The â€Å"teenage celebrities† on these shows are making it through life just fine; portraying that anyone else can too. Yes, these teenagers may have faced hard times in the beginning, but at the end of the day, their lives are unrealistically viewed as ordinary. Both MTV and ABC Family depict the lifestyle of being a pregnant teenager to be somewhat glamorizing. The reality television show 16 and Pregnant was first aired on MTV on June 11, 2009. This show follows the stories of four pregnant teenage girls [Farrah, Maci, Amber and Catelynn] that are in high school dealing with the hardships of teenage pregnancy. â€Å"Each episode follows a five to seven month period in the life of a teenager as she navigates the bumpy terrain of adolescence, growing pains, rebellion, and coming of age; all while dealing with being pregnant† (MTV. com). During the first few episodes of season one, the struggles of dealing with teenage pregnancy seemed difficult and nearly impossible. MTV portrayed each girl as if they were not going to make it through this crisis they were about to face, and their lives were soon coming to an end because being a pregnant teen was not acceptable. As the show continued and episodes passed, these so called â€Å"hardships†, no longer seemed to be that difficult. With all the support from their families and/or boyfriends that they received, these teenage girls were able to get through this bump in the road pretty well. Not only did they get support from people they knew, they received the most of their support from MTV. While teenage pregnancy might have started out rough, becoming an MTV celebrity could not have been too bad. According to Arienne Thompson, author of â€Å"16, Pregnant †¦ and Famous: Teem Moms Are TV’s New Stars†, â€Å"All four women are mainstays on USA TODAY’s Celebrity Heat Index, which measures media exposure; Portwood [Amber] topped the list for October, beating out Angelina Jolie and Prince William. The moms are regularly on the covers of People and Us Weekly and have Facebook fan pages dedicated to them† (USA Today). Putting the stars of these reality shows on a magazine cover puts them in the same place as any other famous person. The message that is being sent out to girls is that if they get pregnant as a result of being sexually active, then they too can end up on TV or on a magazine cover. Being sixteen and pregnant may not be the most ideal lifestyle, but becoming more popular than an experienced, well-known actress at the age of sixteen is another story. Viewers of 16 and Pregnant now see that if they become pregnant at a young age, they also can have the chance to become famous alike Farrah, Maci, Amber and Catelynn did. MTV did not decide to stop there though. As if these girls were not famous enough, as a continuation of 16 and Pregnant, MTV aired Teen Mom on December 8, 2009, only six short months after the broadcast of 16 and Pregnant took place. This show takes the four teenagers from 16 and Pregnant, and documents their first few years of motherhood. Receiving more attention than before, MTV has millions of viewers watching Teen Mom each week, making these â€Å"teenage celebrities† even more famous. Teen Mom executive producer Morgan J. Freeman says, â€Å"The concern for teens, however, is what else they may see in the show. While the Teen Mom stars have their share of struggles on the small screen each week, paparazzi shots and tabloid covers manage to rip them out of the context of MTV and place them in the realm of celebrity† (USA Today). Even celebrities agree that the characters on these shows are becoming too idolized. â€Å"Kim Kardashian boldly states that â€Å"It seems like shows like ‘Teen Mom’ are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy look cool in the eyes of young girls. She even goes a step farther and says that the girls from the shows â€Å"have become almost like celebrities, but girls these are not people you should idolize! †Ã¢â‚¬ (Jadebt13). Along with MTV, ABC Family decided to air a show following the life of a pregnant teenager. On, July 1, 2008, ABC Family aired the show, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which became the network’s most watched series in the 12-34 demographic (McKay 1). This show follows the character Amy Jergen through her pregnant life, and also through her life of being a mother. In the first season, Amy realizes that she has become pregnant, and does not know how to tell her friends or family. This season shows the struggles that Amy faces while being pregnant, but as the season comes to an end, life become simpler to Amy. The Secret Life of the American Teenagers glamorizes her teen pregnancy by having the schools marching band play their instruments as Amy first returns back to school after finding out that she has become pregnant [which is a little unrealistic]. Not only does this event take place, but also Amy’s boyfriend, which is not the father of her soon to be son, proposes the idea of getting married and helping her take care of the baby. At the start of the second season, Amy has her baby boy, named John. With the birth of John everything soon turned into a fairytale ending, and her life completely turned around; her boyfriend problems fall into place, and she started to receive support from her family, friends and community. This season sent out the message to its viewers that if you become pregnant as a teenager, you will have support from surrounding people, when that is not always the case. In conclusion, television is glamorizing the lifestyle of pregnant teenagers. The shows 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager all have different story lines to them, but in the end, they all show that some good can come out of being a pregnant teen. 6 and Pregnant and Teen Mom are both reality television shows that idolize the glamour of being pregnant by the publicizing these girls not only on MTV, but also in outside sources such as magazines. The Secret Life of the American Teenager on the other hand, is a scripted television show that depicts teen pregnancy as being a joy, fun, and simple by showing how great life can be having a baby at such a young age. Both MTV and ABC Family chose to air similar concept shows around the same time period that glamorized teen pregnancy when r ealistic having a baby in your teen years is not ideal, nor a pleasure.

These are essential questions and to answer them, answers the question of using CVP in decision making. The model of CVP is a math model: Ï€j = (pj – vj)xj – Fj where Ï€j = firm j’s profit, pj = firm j’s unit selling price, vj = firm j’s variable costs of producing and selling one unit, xj = number of units produced and sold by firm j, and Fj = firm j’s fixed production, administrative and selling costs. (Magee, R. P., 1975) This is just one model of CVP, there are others that managers use to reach the break-even point, which can help to reach decisions. Babylonian Class Hierarchy It’s Presence in Hammurabi’s...

Babylonian Class Hierarchy It’s Presence in Hammurabi’s Code of Law Upon reading articles and texts concerning Hammurabi’s Code of law, I made a connection between its context and the class hierarchy of early Babylonian civilizations. The structure of the code of law parallels the expectation or rights of those in the different class levels. There are standards that each may be held to, and deviations of those standards have differing penalties for the different classes of peoples. What I found to be interesting, was that slaves (the ardu class) were not specifically born of a certain people or race, but could become a slave as a result of being a prisoner of war, through their crimes, their debts or as a means of self chosen servitude†¦show more content†¦When the statement, â€Å"The great ones surround you.† This led me to believe that this pharaoh believed he’d become equal to the God, and would be one of the great ones to surround the God. Lastly, when the statement said, â€Å"The watchers will wait on you.† I took this to mean slaves in the afterlife, perhaps a sort of purgatory for less fortunate souls. I question why the pharaohs needed these incantations to be written in the pyramids, if they were to be of equal stature on Earth? According to Strayer, p. 108, the pharaohs were believed to be a god in human form. I assume it’s the result of a need for reassurance for their place in the afterlife, a last fee paid or plea for their position in the afterlife. Babylonian class hierarchy seemed present in life and the afterlife according to these sources. The Code of Hammurabi provided order and guidance as to how to sustain these classes and maintain order amongst the earlier civilizations. Bibliography †¢ Strayer, Robert W. Family Unity and Moral Values Essay Example For Students

Family Unity and Moral Values Essay Family Unity and Moral ValuesThe increase in the number of divorces and the decrease in the number ofmarriages does not reflect a breakdown of the family unit in the United Statesand the decay of moral values. I dont think divorce is as big of problem aspoliticians make it out to be. Yes, many couples get divorced, but theirchildren can still have stability and grow up to be good people. (Price) Thebreakdown of the family unit in the United States and the decay of moral valuesare due to the change of society and environment. These days, when manyfamilies are at home together, they often remain apart. There are no bondageand communication in families. Television and technology has corrupted theminds of children in America. Less religious influence, persistent underclassunemployment and alternative lifestyles have contributed in the downfall offamilies and moral values. The nation and state have done little or nothing toprovide help rebuild families and values. Family value has reference to what we believe about the family. Itsconcerned with quality of living and how you define quality of living. Itbasically gets down to what you think is the most important, in other words whatyou value. Family values is nice when youve got Ward and June and Wally andBeaver. Unfortunately, the world has changed quite a bit from the 1950s to 1996. Things have just changed so rapidly and so quick (Anderson) The honesty, setting examples with your morals and actions, and bringing up the people to beresponsible. Responsible for themselves, responsible for ecology, responsiblefor humanity qualities have been neglect in the upbringing of children today. Many people believe that true family values are the stepping stones forfamilies to achieve growth of love. They follow seven principles. 1.Make a commitment to your family and hometown. 2.Live for the greater whole. 3.Learn true love in the school of the family. 4.Dedicate your own family to the global family of humankind. 5.Strive daily to put the spiritual above the physical. 6.Align with heaven to share blessings on earth. 7.Be sexually pure to create the true culture. (Bales)But every family has its own values and few of them are exactly alike. Thevariations are endless, and there is no single ideal standard that all familiescan or should exist. Because society has changed, moral has changed and peoplecan not follow the morals of the past. Both parents assisting in the household income is new in todays societycompared to the past. Where the only the man of the house worked and the womenwould stay home and take care of the children.Todays society require afamily to have two income to survive, one income does not provide a stable lifestyle anymore. The issue of homosexuality and diversity have surfaced, andmoral values have changed. Families are lost in the dream world of their TV sets and video games. Children are learning values and issues from TV and not from their own parents. The children do not learn how to communicate with their parents, and will notlearn to communicate with their mate later in life. Their marriage will end upin divorce and their children will follow the same cycle as they did. The evolving information superhighway will make it even easier forindividuals to lose themselves in non-real worlds at the expense of their veryreal families. People should value their families higher than their fantasies. If parents could be adult about it by cooperating in their childraising, speaking well of each other, and supporting each others decisionswhetherboth parents are in the home or not, then less stress would be put onthe innocent parties, who are often the parents as well as the children. Willbenefit the children as well as themselves But thats not the kind of world welive in, and we point fingers and waste time, money and energy trying to fixblame. That people do not believe that the true solutions toget the family in the right track are spiritual and moral. Would you rather be surrounded by a million people who were very religious, orwould you rather be surrounded by a million people who were not very religious?I think we would rather be surrounded by those who are religious, because wewould feel more safe (Carter)I think religion has wonderful things to offer. It makes you stop and thinkabout whether what we are doing is right or wrong, as opposed to secular law, which makes you wonder whether what you are doing is going to get you arrestedor not. (Carter)To Jews, the point of your existence on Earth is to help improve the world. This creation is unfinished, a team effort between humans and God. We have thebasic raw matter, and we are given free will, and our job is to make this placebeautiful. (Carter)Politicians love to rhapsodize about the virtues of traditional families, religious principles and personal integrity. Yet the truth is these high-minded,abstract ideals are conspicuously missing in may of their personal lives. It iscommon wisdom now among both parties that forcing mothers off welfare into thejob market will counter the breakdown of the inner-city family by instilling thework ethic and responsibility. But what will this do for family values if thereis no welfare for food and no available work for the uneducated and theuntrained? Our nation, states and communities should spend more of their time making iteasier and more attractive for people to connect on a personal, face-to-facelevel and for families to re-learn the pleasures of sharing productiveactivities rather than helping lock us each into a technological cocoon.(Medved)The increase in the number of divorces and the decrease in the number ofmarriages does not reflect a breakdown of the family unit in the United Statesand the decay of moral values. The only solution is to connect, communicate and establish bondage in the family. Try to spend more time andenergy with families will greatly improve family unity and moral values. Social Issues
